Testosterone in women is replaced through the skin using a gel or cream which you rub in. The gel is made for men so women should use a much smaller amount. The cream is made for women but is not available on the NHS, it is licenced in Australia and only available in the UK on a private prescription. If you decide you wish to start testosterone replacement, the Consultant will help you decide which preparation is best for you.
Testosterone replacement in women for low sex drive is not a licenced medication in the UK and we will discuss this with you before prescribing the medication. The data available shows that testosterone is safe in otherwise healthy women although long term safety data is awaited.
If you take the testosterone as prescribed, then side effects are uncommon. These may include acne, unwanted hair growth and weight gain. Other more serious side effects are rare, if testosterone levels are monitored and remain normal.
Abbey Menopause recommend that we monitor your blood testosterone level prior to commencing testosterone replacement and whilst you are using it. This will also be discussed with you during your consultation. If you remain free from side effects, we recommend you try testosterone replacement for at least 3 months as it can take some time to feel the full effect.
